A former Google DeepMind researcher has joined a growing group of AI experts warning that increasingly advanced artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity.
Bilal Chughtai, who worked on artificial general intelligence (AGI) safety and alignment research at DeepMind before leaving the company in July, said he believes AI has the potential to “kill us all” and warned that time to prevent such an outcome could be running out.
His comments follow similar warnings from researchers at Anthropic, including Evan Hubinger, who has estimated a greater than 10% chance that AI could cause human extinction within the next decade. The warnings have intensified debate over whether the development of increasingly powerful AI systems is moving too quickly.
Chughtai said safely developing advanced AI remains possible but would require greater coordination among technology companies and a slower pace of development, allowing emerging risks to be addressed before they result in serious harm.
