Altera, the semiconductor company backed by Silver Lake and Intel, has confidentially filed for an initial public offering in the United States, positioning the chipmaker for a potential return to the public markets.
The filing marks a significant step for Altera, which develops programmable chips used across data centers, telecommunications, industrial systems and other technology applications. The company has also been positioning its products to benefit from growing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Silver Lake acquired a 51% stake in Altera from Intel last year in a deal that valued the business at about $8.75 billion. Intel retained a 49% interest following the transaction.
The proposed IPO comes amid renewed strength in the U.S. technology and semiconductor markets, where investor interest in companies tied to AI and advanced computing remains strong. Details including the number of shares to be offered and the expected valuation have not yet been disclosed.
Altera’s confidential filing allows the company to continue preparations for the offering before publicly disclosing its registration documents. The timing and size of the IPO could still change depending on market conditions and regulatory review.
