US President Donald Trump has arrived in Ireland for a two-day visit combining diplomatic engagements with the Irish Open golf tournament at his resort in Doonbeg, County Clare.

Trump landed in Dublin on Saturday under tight security and is scheduled to meet Irish President Catherine Connolly and Prime Minister Micheál Martin during the visit. He will also address American and Irish business leaders before travelling west to his golf resort on the Atlantic coast.

The visit comes as Ireland and the United States maintain strong economic ties, with American-owned companies employing a significant share of Ireland’s workforce. Discussions between Trump and Irish leaders are expected to touch on economic and trade issues as well as wider international concerns.

Martin has described the relationship between Ireland and the United States as highly significant to both countries, particularly because of the deep commercial links that have developed over several decades.

Trump’s schedule, however, has attracted attention because the main recreational element of the trip is taking place at a golf course owned by his organisation. The Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg is hosting this year’s Irish Open, one of the major events on the European professional golf calendar.

The president is expected to watch the tournament and participate in the presentation of the trophy to the winner on Sunday before returning to the United States.

His visit has also generated controversy in parts of Ireland, with protests planned in Dublin and western Ireland. Critics have questioned the timing of the trip and Trump’s decision to combine presidential engagements with activities at his privately owned resort.

Security has been significantly increased for the visit, with thousands of police and other security personnel deployed across Dublin and around Doonbeg. Authorities have introduced extensive measures to protect the president and manage the expected crowds and demonstrations.

Trump’s meeting with Connolly is also attracting particular interest. The Irish president has previously been critical of some of Trump’s policies, particularly on international affairs, making their encounter one of the more closely watched moments of the visit.

Despite the political differences, Irish officials have emphasised the importance of maintaining constructive relations with Washington. The United States remains a major economic partner for Ireland, while Ireland continues to have strong links with the large Irish-American community.

The visit therefore brings together diplomacy, business and Trump’s longstanding interest in golf, with Irish officials hoping the engagements will reinforce bilateral relations while avoiding unnecessary political tensions.

For Trump, the weekend represents a rare combination of presidential diplomacy and a major golf event at one of his own properties, putting both his political responsibilities and business interests in the spotlight.
