The death toll from a suspected poisoning incident linked to the consumption of herbal preparations in Ondo State has risen to 29, with dozens of other residents reportedly affected and receiving medical attention.

The incident occurred in communities within Odigbo Local Government Area, where residents reportedly fell ill after consuming a locally prepared herbal substance. The sudden outbreak has raised concerns among health authorities and residents as investigations continue into what may have caused the deaths.

Reports from the affected area indicate that several people developed symptoms after consuming the suspected herbal drink. Some victims were taken to health facilities for treatment, while authorities moved to establish the source of the substance and determine whether contamination or another form of poisoning was responsible.

The Ondo State Government has confirmed the rising death toll and said efforts were underway to respond to the situation. Authorities are also monitoring suspected cases and providing medical attention to those who remain under observation.

The incident has affected communities including Odigbo and Araromi-Obu, with reports indicating that residents who consumed the substance were among those who became sick. Police have also commenced investigations into the deaths reported across the affected communities.

Health officials are expected to conduct further examinations and investigations to establish the exact cause of the illness and deaths. The authorities have yet to conclusively determine whether the herbal preparation itself was contaminated or whether another substance was responsible.

The development has renewed concerns over the consumption of unregulated herbal preparations, particularly products prepared and distributed without adequate quality control. Health professionals have repeatedly warned that substances presented as traditional remedies can pose serious risks when their ingredients, preparation methods or dosage are unknown.

Authorities are expected to continue surveillance in the affected communities while medical teams attend to those who may have been exposed.

Residents have also been urged to exercise caution and avoid consuming unidentified herbal mixtures until investigations establish what caused the outbreak.

The death toll stood at 29 in the latest confirmation, although reports from the affected area have continued to evolve as health authorities assess suspected cases and monitor those receiving treatment.
