Chelsea forward João Pedro has been named the Premier League Player of the Month for August after making an impressive start to the 2026/27 season.

The 24-year-old Brazilian scored two goals and provided two assists in his first three league appearances, playing a key role as Chelsea began the campaign strongly. It is the first time João Pedro has won the monthly award.

His performances have also earned high praise from Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, who has placed the striker among the Premier League’s leading forwards and compared aspects of his game to former Real Madrid great Karim Benzema.

Asked whether João Pedro could be regarded as being on the same level as Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, Alonso gave a clear response.

The Chelsea manager said he believed the Brazilian belonged in that category, pointing to his overall quality, maturity and desire to improve rather than simply his goalscoring record.

Alonso also drew a comparison with Benzema, highlighting João Pedro’s ability to contribute in different areas of the attack. The Chelsea boss believes the forward is comfortable inside the penalty area, can operate outside it, move towards the left and threaten opponents in the air.

That versatility has become an important part of Chelsea’s attacking approach under Alonso. João Pedro has been operating alongside Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, with the three forwards developing an understanding that has given Chelsea several options in the final third.

João Pedro’s form comes after he scored 20 goals in 50 appearances for Chelsea last season. His latest performances have strengthened his position as a central figure in Alonso’s plans for the new campaign.

The award also represents a significant personal milestone for the striker and comes at a time when he is seeking to establish himself as one of the leading forwards in English football.

Chelsea’s attacking players have made a particularly strong contribution during the opening weeks of the campaign, with João Pedro, Palmer and Rogers providing goals and assists while adapting to Alonso’s system.

João Pedro’s recognition has also coincided with his return to the Brazil setup after he was left out of the country’s World Cup squad earlier in the summer. His early-season form has now given him another opportunity to make an impression at international level.

For Alonso, however, the focus is likely to remain on maintaining that form over an entire season. The Premier League award recognises João Pedro’s performances in August, but the Chelsea manager’s comparisons with Haaland and Benzema have inevitably raised expectations around what the striker can produce in the months ahead.

Chelsea are scheduled to face Hull City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with João Pedro expected to remain central to the team’s attacking plans.

If he can maintain his current level of performance, the Brazilian could become one of the most influential players in Alonso’s first season at the club.
