Amazon Pay India Plans to Expand Insurance Business

Amazon Pay India is considering adding travel insurance and other products as it expands beyond payments into a broader financial services business, CEO Vikas Bansal said on Friday.

The company launched health insurance a day earlier and already distributes vehicle insurance through its platform. Bansal said travel insurance could be among its next offerings.

Amazon Pay operates as a registered corporate insurance agent and partners with licensed insurers, including HDFC ERGO for health insurance.

Bansal said health insurance is a key growth area as medical costs rise and relatively few Indians have personal health coverage.

Amazon Pay’s wider strategy includes payments, credit, insurance, savings and investment products. The company is also open to further investments in the insurance sector.

Amazon is a minority shareholder in Indian insurer Acko and last year acquired digital lender Axio, strengthening its presence in India’s financial services market.
