India should create a forum to help its technology companies engage foreign governments and regulators collectively, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday.
Speaking at the Global Fintech Forum in Mumbai, Sitharaman said the platform could help Indian companies address regulatory issues before new rules create barriers to market access.
She said Indian technology firms are expanding overseas as governments introduce regulations covering emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital asset tokenisation.
Sitharaman said startups should not be expected to understand and negotiate complex regulatory systems in every country on their own.
The proposed forum could also help companies license their technology abroad, build partnerships, enter new markets and promote compatible standards for data and cybersecurity.
She added that while some countries have regulations designed to encourage innovation, others could unintentionally make it harder for new companies to enter their markets.
