Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, has urged Nigerians to reject what he described as foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs over allegations involving President Bola Tinubu that date back more than three decades.
Buratai made the call in a position paper titled, “Nigeria First, A Case for Protecting National Sovereignty and Dignity, A Patriotic and Non Partisan Perspective”, which he shared on his verified Facebook page on Sunday.
His statement comes amid renewed attention to documents allegedly connected to past drug trafficking investigations involving President Tinubu in the United States.
The former Army chief argued that the controversy should not be allowed to damage Nigeria’s international reputation or undermine the country’s sovereignty. He urged Nigerians to place national interest above political considerations and resist attempts by foreign actors to influence domestic affairs.
Buratai maintained that issues concerning Nigeria and its leaders should be handled within the country’s legal and democratic institutions, rather than through external pressure.
He also stressed the importance of protecting Nigeria’s dignity and sovereignty while encouraging Nigerians to approach politically sensitive allegations with caution and patriotism.
The renewed controversy has generated public debate as calls continue for the release of historical documents relating to the allegations against Tinubu.
