The Association of Presidents and Proprietors of Higher Institutions in Nigeria (APPHIN) has commended the Federal Government for expanding medical education and training opportunities to private higher institutions.
APPHIN National Secretariat, Dr Kamaludeen Muhammed, in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, described the initiative to expand medical education and support the training of 20,000 medical students annually as bold and forward looking.
Muhammed also praised the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, for his efforts to reform and strengthen Nigeria’s education sector, saying the initiative could help address the country’s shortage of medical professionals and improve access to quality healthcare.
However, he urged the ministry to fully integrate qualified private institutions into the implementation framework, particularly those with the infrastructure, academic personnel and capacity to contribute to medical training.
He called for clear and accessible guidelines on how private institutions can access accredited medical simulation centres for clinical and practical training, including accreditation requirements, fees and partnership arrangements.
Muhammed said collaboration between government, private institutions, regulators and educational investors would make the expansion of medical education more effective and sustainable.
He reaffirmed APPHIN’s support for government efforts to expand quality education and develop the skilled healthcare workforce needed for Nigeria’s development.
