France will announce a €1 billion ($1.16 billion) aid package for farmers whose crops and livestock suffered major losses during this summer’s heatwaves, BFM TV reported on Friday.

Farm Minister Annie Genevard is due to announce the measures at a news conference at 0700 GMT.

The aid follows one of the most severe periods of heat and drought recorded in France and western Europe, which damaged crops and pastures and put pressure on water supplies.

The government has faced growing calls for support for farmers affected by extreme weather, with heatwaves and prolonged dry conditions disrupting agricultural production across the country.

The package is expected to provide financial assistance to farmers affected by crop and livestock losses, although further details were not immediately available.
