Nvidia has agreed to acquire artificial intelligence developer platform Hugging Face for $12.93bn, in one of the chipmaker’s biggest moves yet to strengthen its position beyond the hardware that has powered much of the global AI boom.

The acquisition gives Nvidia control of one of the most important platforms in the open AI ecosystem, where developers and researchers share, test and deploy artificial intelligence models, datasets and software tools.

The deal is valued at nearly three times Hugging Face’s $4.5bn valuation from 2023, when the company raised $235m in a funding round that included Nvidia. The transaction underlines how quickly the value of AI infrastructure and developer platforms has risen as companies race to build increasingly capable systems.

Hugging Face has developed into a major meeting point for the AI development community. Its platform hosts millions of models, datasets and applications, giving developers access to tools that can be adapted for different tasks rather than forcing them to build artificial intelligence systems entirely from scratch.

The company has also positioned itself strongly around open source and open weight AI, an area attracting increasing attention as businesses and researchers look for alternatives to proprietary systems operated by some of the industry’s biggest technology companies.

Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said Hugging Face would remain an open platform following the acquisition. The company is also expected to maintain support for different cloud providers and computing hardware rather than making Nvidia technology a compulsory requirement for users.

That commitment could prove important for Nvidia as it takes ownership of a platform used across a broad section of the AI community.

Nvidia dominates the market for high performance chips used to train and run AI systems, but competition is growing as major technology companies increasingly develop their own processors. OpenAI and Microsoft are among companies pursuing alternatives to Nvidia’s hardware, creating a long term challenge for the chipmaker’s traditional business.

The Hugging Face acquisition gives Nvidia a much deeper presence at another stage of the AI chain: the developers and organisations actually building and deploying models.

The company will also gain greater access to a community that includes startups, researchers and large businesses experimenting with new AI applications.

The purchase comes as Nvidia continues to spend heavily across the artificial intelligence sector. The company has invested in several AI businesses and previously backed Hugging Face as part of its 2023 funding round.

The latest transaction represents a substantial increase in Nvidia’s financial commitment to the company and signals the strategic importance it places on open AI development.

Hugging Face has attracted support from a range of major technology investors, while its platform has become a widely used destination for developers working with machine learning and generative AI.

According to figures reported following the acquisition announcement, the company now serves more than 18 million developers and about 200,000 businesses. Its platform contains more than three million models, 500,000 datasets and one million applications.

The agreement also includes a roughly $1bn employee retention programme designed to keep key Hugging Face staff with the business after the acquisition.

For Nvidia, the challenge will be maintaining the openness that helped make Hugging Face valuable while integrating the platform into a company whose core business depends heavily on its own computing ecosystem.

The acquisition also arrives at a sensitive moment for the wider AI industry, with growing debate over the concentration of technological power among a small number of companies and concerns about the security of increasingly sophisticated AI systems.

Still, Nvidia’s decision reflects a broader shift in the industry. Control of the AI economy is no longer limited to the companies producing the chips or training the biggest models. Developer communities, model repositories, datasets and deployment platforms are becoming strategically important in their own right.

By acquiring Hugging Face, Nvidia is positioning itself to play a larger role across that expanding ecosystem, betting that the next phase of the AI race will be shaped as much by the people building and distributing models as by the hardware running them.
