Police have arrested a 19 year old man in connection with a shooting at Virginia State University that left five people injured, including one who remains in critical condition.
Camron Harris of Henrico, Virginia, was found hiding in a dormitory closet on Saturday, according to Chesterfield County police. Authorities said Harris is not a university student, while four of the five victims are also not students. The victims, whose names have not been released, are between 17 and 23 years old.
Police obtained eight felony warrants against Harris, including charges of malicious wounding and using a firearm during the commission of a felony. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive.
The shooting occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. near the university’s Quad Annexes, where officers found the victims with gunshot wounds. The incident prompted a campus lockdown, which was later lifted after authorities determined there was no immediate threat to the wider university community.
One injured 20 year old student has since been discharged from hospital.
The shooting occurred as students were returning for the new academic year, with classes scheduled to resume Monday. Federal and local law enforcement agencies, including the ATF and Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, assisted with the investigation.
Virginia State University, a historically Black university in Ettrick, Virginia, has about 5,700 students.
