Meta has launched a new open-weight artificial intelligence model as CEO Mark Zuckerberg calls for fewer barriers to the development of openly available AI systems.
Meta’s new model, Muse Glimmer, is designed to handle smaller AI tasks on personal devices and can operate using a single graphics card, potentially making advanced AI more accessible to developers and users.
Zuckerberg is also stepping up his support for open-weight AI, arguing that the approach can offer developers more affordable and customizable alternatives to closed AI systems.
He warned that excessive restrictions in the United States could make it harder for American developers to compete with China in the rapidly growing AI industry.
Meta also announced plans for Muse Spark 1.2, which the company describes as its most advanced AI model yet. In addition, Meta plans to establish a $1 billion fund aimed at supporting communities affected by the expansion of data centers.
The moves highlight Meta’s growing focus on open AI models as competition intensifies among major technology companies to lead the next generation of artificial intelligence.
