An eight room residential building was gutted by fire on Saturday night at No. 37 Ifesowapo, Atilapa, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident occurred at about 10:53 p.m. after the Oyo State Fire Services Agency received a distress call reporting the fire.
According to the agency, firefighters led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Amoo promptly responded to the scene and found the building engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the property.
The fire crew immediately commenced firefighting operations and successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring buildings and properties.
No casualty was recorded in the incident.
Unattended Cooking Gas Blamed
Preliminary investigations by the fire service indicated that the blaze was caused by an unattended cooking gas, which ignited nearby combustible materials before spreading through the building.
Following the firefighting operation, the agency conducted a brief fire safety awareness session for residents and members of the public at the scene.
Officials urged residents to contact the fire service immediately whenever a fire emergency occurs and to provide accurate addresses to enable emergency responders to locate affected properties quickly.
The firefighting appliance returned safely to the station at about 6:54 a.m. on Sunday and was placed on operational standby for further emergency response.
The Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents to remain vigilant and observe basic fire safety precautions.
Akinwande also stressed the importance of installing functional fire extinguishers in homes, saying they could help occupants control fires at an early stage before they escalate.
The agency reiterated its appeal to members of the public to report fire incidents promptly and provide clear and accurate locations to facilitate swift emergency response.
