The Benue State Government has adopted a comprehensive five-year strategic plan aimed at strengthening agriculture, improving food security and fostering lasting peace across the state.
The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging Benue’s vast agricultural potential to drive economic growth, enhance rural livelihoods and address challenges affecting food production and community stability.
The strategic plan outlines a roadmap for increasing agricultural productivity through improved access to quality inputs, modern farming technologies, mechanisation, extension services and investment in agricultural value chains.
Officials said the programme is designed to empower farmers, attract private-sector investment and create an enabling environment for sustainable agricultural development capable of meeting the food needs of the state’s growing population.
As Nigeria’s leading food-producing state, Benue plays a critical role in national food security. The government noted that strengthening the agricultural sector is essential not only for boosting food production but also for generating employment, reducing poverty and stimulating economic development.
The five-year strategy also places significant emphasis on promoting peace and social cohesion, recognising that stable and secure farming communities are fundamental to sustained agricultural productivity.
According to government officials, the plan includes initiatives to encourage dialogue, strengthen community engagement and support peaceful coexistence among residents, particularly in areas affected by recurring conflicts.
The strategy further prioritises climate-smart agriculture and sustainable natural resource management to help farmers adapt to changing weather patterns while preserving the environment for future generations.
Investment in irrigation systems, rural infrastructure, storage facilities and market access also forms part of the roadmap, with the aim of reducing post-harvest losses and improving the profitability of farming activities.
Stakeholders in the agricultural sector have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that aligns with national efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency and strengthen rural economies.
They stressed that effective implementation of the plan would require sustained collaboration among government agencies, development partners, financial institutions, the private sector and farming communities.
Experts also highlighted the importance of regular monitoring and evaluation to ensure that the objectives of the strategy are achieved and that emerging challenges are addressed promptly.
The adoption of the five-year strategic plan reflects Benue’s determination to position agriculture as a catalyst for inclusive economic growth while using sustainable development as a pathway to peace and stability.
If successfully implemented, the initiative is expected to increase agricultural output, improve household incomes, strengthen food systems and create new opportunities for agribusinesses across the state.
Beyond its economic impact, the strategy is anticipated to reinforce peaceful coexistence by addressing some of the socio-economic factors that contribute to rural conflicts, ensuring that farming communities can thrive in a secure and supportive environment.
With the launch of the plan, Benue has reaffirmed its commitment to building a resilient agricultural sector capable of driving prosperity, ensuring food security and laying the foundation for sustainable peace and development over the next five years.
