Nigerian Authorities Arrest Chinese Nationals in Crackdown on Illegal Mining in Nasarawa

Nigerian authorities have arrested several Chinese nationals in Nasarawa State over their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities, as the government intensifies efforts to curb illicit mineral extraction and safeguard the country’s solid minerals sector.

The arrests were made during a coordinated enforcement operation targeting unauthorized mining sites in parts of the state. Officials said the suspects were found operating without the required licenses and were allegedly involved in the unlawful extraction of mineral resources.

Authorities also recovered mining equipment and other materials believed to have been used in the illegal operations. Investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the activities, identify local collaborators and establish whether environmental and mining regulations were breached.

The Federal Government has stepped up its campaign against illegal mining, citing concerns over revenue losses, environmental degradation, insecurity and the exploitation of Nigeria’s mineral wealth by unauthorized operators.

Officials from the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development have repeatedly warned that individuals and companies engaged in mining without valid permits will face prosecution in accordance with the law. The government has also strengthened collaboration with security agencies to monitor mining communities and dismantle illegal mining networks.

Nasarawa State is one of Nigeria’s leading mineral-producing states, with deposits of lithium, tin, columbite, tantalite, barite and other valuable minerals. The growing global demand for critical minerals has increased investment in the sector but has also fueled a rise in illegal mining activities.

Industry experts say tackling illegal mining is essential to attracting legitimate investment, protecting host communities and ensuring that Nigeria derives maximum economic benefits from its mineral resources.

The latest arrests underscore the government’s determination to enforce mining regulations and promote responsible resource development as part of broader efforts to diversify the economy beyond oil.

Authorities said the suspects will be prosecuted if found to have violated Nigeria’s mining and environmental laws, while further operations are expected to continue across other mineral rich regions of the country.
