U.S. President Donald Trump has revived allegations that China interfered in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, a move that has drawn a swift denial from Beijing and raised concerns about the future of relations between the world’s two largest economies.

Trump made the claims during a prime time address from the White House after ordering the declassification of intelligence documents that he said showed Chinese efforts to influence the 2020 election. He alleged that China had improperly obtained data on millions of American voters and accused U.S. officials of concealing the information from the public.

China’s Foreign Ministry strongly rejected the allegations, with spokesperson Lin Jian describing them as “entirely fabricated” and urging Washington to stop making what Beijing called groundless accusations. Chinese officials also warned that such rhetoric could undermine efforts to maintain stable bilateral relations ahead of a planned meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year.

Trump’s claims contradict findings from a 2021 U.S. intelligence assessment, which concluded there was no evidence that any foreign government altered the outcome of the 2020 election. Intelligence agencies found no proof that China interfered with vote counting or successfully influenced the election result, although they acknowledged that foreign actors routinely attempt to gather publicly available political information.

The president also renewed his call for stricter election laws, including mandatory voter identification and proof of citizenship requirements, arguing that stronger safeguards are needed to protect future elections. Democratic lawmakers and election experts criticised the remarks, saying they risk undermining public confidence in the electoral process by repeating claims that have not been supported by evidence.

Analysts say the renewed accusations could complicate diplomatic efforts between Washington and Beijing at a time when both countries have been working to stabilise relations following months of trade negotiations and geopolitical tensions over Taiwan, technology and security issues. Despite the sharp exchange of words, neither government has announced new economic or diplomatic measures in response.
