A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer involved in a fatal shooting in Maine had a documented history of violent behavior and domestic disputes, according to court records and interviews with family members reviewed by Reuters.

The officer, whose actions are under investigation following the shooting, had previously been the subject of police reports and legal proceedings involving allegations of assault, threats and other violent conduct, Reuters reported. Family members said they had long expressed concerns about his behavior, describing a pattern of aggression that they believe should have raised red flags before the incident.

Authorities have not said whether the officer’s prior history played any role in the shooting, which remains under investigation by state law enforcement and federal officials. The circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the use of force was justified, are still being examined.

ICE said it is cooperating fully with investigators and declined to comment on the officer’s employment history, citing the ongoing investigation. The agency added that it takes allegations of misconduct seriously and will review the findings once the inquiry is complete.

The case has renewed scrutiny of hiring practices, background checks and oversight within U.S. federal law enforcement agencies. Civil rights advocates have called for greater transparency and accountability, arguing that officers with documented histories of violent behavior should be subject to closer review before being allowed to carry firearms or perform enforcement duties.

Investigators are expected to interview witnesses, review body camera footage and examine the officer’s disciplinary and employment records as they work to determine whether any criminal charges or administrative action are warranted.
