Six governorship candidates in the North-East have rejected the recognition of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, as the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the region.
The candidates reportedly maintained that they do not recognise Lawal as the North-East leader of the political coalition, raising questions over the leadership structure and representation of the group in the region.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts by opposition groups to strengthen their political structures and coordination across the North-East ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The disagreement over regional leadership could further shape the organisation of the NDC and its engagement with governorship candidates and other political stakeholders across Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe.
The six candidates’ position highlights the continuing political realignment and internal discussions among opposition figures as parties and political groups prepare for the 2027 elections.
