The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has announced that the next pension review for retirees of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) will not take place until 2027, a decision that has sparked concern among pensioners who had anticipated an earlier adjustment to their monthly benefits.

The Commission explained that the postponement is in line with the statutory framework guiding pension reviews under the Contributory Pension Scheme. According to officials, periodic pension adjustments are carried out based on established legal provisions and available funding, with the next review for former PHCN retirees now scheduled for 2027.

The clarification comes amid growing enquiries from pensioners seeking information on when their pensions would be reviewed in light of rising inflation and the increasing cost of living. Many retirees have argued that the current economic realities have significantly reduced the purchasing power of their monthly pensions, making it difficult to meet basic household needs.

PenCom noted that while it understands the financial challenges facing retirees, pension reviews must follow due process and be implemented within the provisions of the Pension Reform Act. The Commission added that any review must also take into account the financial sustainability of pension funds to ensure that retirees continue to receive their benefits without disruption.

Former PHCN employees who retired under the Contributory Pension Scheme have consistently called for regular pension adjustments to reflect prevailing economic conditions. Pensioners’ associations have maintained that rising prices of food, healthcare, transportation and other essential commodities have placed additional pressure on retired workers living on fixed incomes.

Labour and pension advocates have also expressed concern over the delayed review, urging the government to explore measures that could provide temporary relief to pensioners before the next scheduled adjustment. They argue that protecting retirees from the impact of inflation is essential to safeguarding their welfare after decades of public service.

Economic analysts observed that the postponement highlights the broader challenge of balancing pension sustainability with the need to preserve retirees’ purchasing power. While maintaining the long term viability of pension funds is critical, they noted that prolonged delays in pension reviews could leave many retirees struggling to cope with the rising cost of living.

Experts further stressed the importance of maintaining transparent communication between pension regulators and retirees to reduce uncertainty and ensure beneficiaries clearly understand the basis for policy decisions. They added that consistent pension reforms and prudent fund management remain key to sustaining confidence in Nigeria’s pension system.

Despite the delay, the Commission reassured retirees that the payment of monthly pensions and other accrued benefits will continue as scheduled. It reiterated its commitment to ensuring the efficient administration of pension funds while working with relevant stakeholders to strengthen the country’s retirement benefit system.

As the 2027 review date approaches, retirees and pension advocacy groups are expected to continue engaging with the government on measures that could improve the welfare of pensioners. Many stakeholders believe that maintaining a balance between fiscal responsibility and the wellbeing of retirees will remain a key priority for Nigeria’s pension administration.
