Public sector workers have given the Federal Government until September 30, 2026, to address worsening economic hardship affecting workers and their families nationwide.
The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, Trade Union Side, demanded urgent measures to reduce the impact of rising fuel prices, inflation and the increasing cost of food, transportation, housing, healthcare and education.
The workers called for petrol to be stabilised at N500 per litre and demanded a N500,000 minimum salary for Grade Level 01, Step 1 under a proposed 2027 salary structure.
They also urged the government to approve a wage award, review salaries and allowances, and immediately begin negotiations for a new national minimum wage expected to take effect from January 2027.
The council warned that the worsening hardship was creating tension among workers and Nigerians, urging the government to act before September 30.
The Nigeria Labour Congress also expressed support for urgent government intervention to ease the cost-of-living crisis.
