The Federal Government has commenced the training of 4,000 tractor operators as part of a broader strategy to enhance agricultural productivity, improve mechanised farming and strengthen food security across the country.
The initiative is aimed at equipping participants with the technical skills required to operate and maintain modern agricultural machinery, ensuring that farmers have greater access to efficient mechanisation services during planting and harvesting seasons.
Government officials said the programme forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s agricultural sector by reducing dependence on manual farming practices and increasing the efficiency of food production. They noted that expanding the pool of trained tractor operators would improve access to mechanised services, particularly for smallholder farmers who account for a significant share of the country’s food output.
According to the authorities, the training covers tractor operation, routine maintenance, equipment safety and best practices in mechanised agriculture. Participants are also being exposed to modern farming techniques designed to improve productivity while reducing post harvest losses.
The government expressed optimism that the initiative would contribute to higher crop yields, lower production costs and increased agricultural competitiveness. Officials added that improved mechanisation would help address labour shortages, shorten cultivation periods and encourage greater participation by young people in agriculture.
Agricultural experts welcomed the programme, describing it as a positive step towards transforming Nigeria’s farming sector. They, however, stressed that sustained access to tractors, affordable financing, quality inputs and rural infrastructure would be essential to maximise the impact of the training.
Analysts also noted that increased mechanisation could strengthen the country’s food value chain by boosting production, supporting agro processing industries and reducing dependence on food imports. They argued that continuous investment in agricultural technology and extension services would be critical to achieving long term food security.
The latest initiative comes as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to improve domestic food production, curb rising food inflation and build a more resilient agricultural sector capable of meeting the nutritional needs of Nigeria’s growing population.
