Iran is prepared to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States eases military pressure and lifts its blockade on Iranian ports, a senior Iranian official has told Reuters.
The official said Iran wants Washington to formally declare its intention to resolve the dispute through diplomacy before agreeing on a timetable for further steps.
Iran’s delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York has reportedly been given authority to revive diplomatic discussions with the United States. Tehran also said its proposal for ending hostilities was delivered to Washington through mediators on September 16.
The Iranian official described the UN General Assembly as an opportunity to restart diplomacy, provided the United States takes concrete measures.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is attending the UN General Assembly but is not expected to meet US President Donald Trump, according to the official.
