The United Kingdom has officially removed Nigeria, Ghana, and India from the list of countries eligible to apply directly for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England. The change, which takes effect from September 2026, means teachers trained in these countries will no longer have access to the fast-track route for recognition in UK schools.
According to the UK Department for Education, the decision was based on verification challenges. Officials revealed that over 70% of applications from Nigeria and Ghana contained references using public email domains, making it difficult to confirm authenticity. India was excluded because it lacks a national regulator capable of validating teachers’ professional standing.
Despite the removal, teachers from other countries such as Australia, Canada, the United States, New Zealand, South Africa, and several European nations remain eligible for direct QTS applications. The UK government emphasized that the move is aimed at safeguarding standards and ensuring that only properly verified professionals enter the teaching workforce.
For Nigerian and Ghanaian teachers, the new policy means they must now explore alternative pathways, including additional qualifications or assessments, before being recognized to teach in England.
