South African police have arrested three suspects — one man and two women — over the killing of a woman whose body was found east of Johannesburg, as authorities investigate a series of deaths involving women in the area.
The woman’s body was discovered last week in Ekurhuleni municipality, where police have found the bodies of nine women over the past two months. Most of the victims were in their 20s and 30s, with some reportedly showing signs of sexual assault.
Police said they are investigating whether the killings are connected, although no link has yet been established. Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili said the latest killing may have resulted from a suspected “love triangle”, but investigations are continuing.
The arrests come amid renewed public concern over gender-based violence in South Africa. Police said more than 350 people were arrested for rape in the past week as part of a wider crackdown on violence against women.
