Morocco has appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the country’s first woman Prime Minister, marking a historic development in the North African kingdom.

King Mohammed VI named the 50 year old lawyer and politician to lead the government on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, after her Authenticity and Modernity Party, PAM, emerged as the largest party in last week’s parliamentary election.

The Royal Palace said El Mansouri had been tasked with forming a new government. PAM won 97 of the 395 seats in the House of Representatives, meaning it will need to negotiate with other parties to form a governing coalition.

El Mansouri previously served as Morocco’s minister responsible for national planning, urban planning, housing and city policy. She also served as mayor of Marrakech, becoming the first woman to hold that position in 2009 before returning to the office in 2021.

Her appointment makes her the second woman to serve as a head of government in the Arab world, after Tunisia’s Najla Bouden.

Her incoming administration is expected to address issues including inflation, employment, wages and social services, while overseeing major investments connected to Morocco’s preparations to co host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
