Tension erupted in Osogbo, Osun State, after residents who paid money to a cheap food scheme reportedly stormed the premises of Global Food Initiative following the disappearance of its operators.

The scheme had attracted residents with food items advertised at prices significantly below prevailing market rates. Customers were required to make advance payments and wait about seven days before collecting their purchases.

However, many customers who returned to the company’s office in the Odi-Olowo area after the waiting period reportedly found the premises deserted. Some victims said they had paid hundreds of thousands and millions of naira for rice, cooking oil, spaghetti, semovita and other food items.

According to reports, some aggrieved residents attempted to break into the company’s storeroom after the operators allegedly disappeared. Police personnel were deployed to the area to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

The Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said officers were monitoring the situation and had not received a formal complaint from affected customers at the time of his statement.

The incident has left several residents worried about recovering their money, while calls have been made for an investigation into the food scheme and the whereabouts of its operators.
