De Zerbi Criticises Spurs Players After Villa Defeat

Tottenham made a promising start at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and created several opportunities in the opening stages, but Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced a series of important saves to keep the visitors in the game.

The match changed shortly before half-time when Tottenham were temporarily reduced to 10 men as Micky van de Ven received treatment on the touchline. Villa took advantage of the gap in the Spurs defence, with Johan Manzambi putting the visitors ahead in added time.

De Zerbi was particularly unhappy with the manner in which his side conceded, saying his players had been warned about Villa’s use of long balls but failed to respond properly when the situation occurred.

Tottenham continued to struggle after the break. Mohammed Kudus appeared to have equalised, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Villa then punished further defensive mistakes. Nicolas Jackson doubled the visitors’ lead in the 67th minute before Emiliano Buendía produced a superb long-range finish to make it 3-0 with 11 minutes of normal time remaining.

Tottenham eventually showed some urgency in the closing stages, with Conor Gallagher pulling one back in the 86th minute. Jan Paul van Hecke then headed in a second goal deep into stoppage time, but the late comeback was not enough to save Spurs.

De Zerbi was visibly unhappy after the final whistle and said he was disappointed, sad and frustrated with the team’s performance.

The Italian also questioned his players’ physical condition and mentality, stressing that Tottenham must become stronger in difficult moments rather than allowing setbacks to affect their performance.

The defeat means Spurs head into the international break without a Premier League win after five matches. They have collected only two points and now sit in the relegation zone.

For Aston Villa, the result provided their first league victory of the campaign under Unai Emery. Villa had struggled for results before Saturday but showed greater efficiency after surviving Tottenham’s early pressure.

De Zerbi now has an extended international break to work with his squad and address the weaknesses exposed against Villa. Tottenham will need a significant response when Premier League action resumes if they are to move away from the bottom of the table.
