Military officials and security experts at China’s Beijing Xiangshan Forum have warned that rapid AI development and growing technology rivalry could increase global security risks.
Delegates said AI is shortening the time governments and militaries have to make decisions, while misinformation could undermine public trust during crises. They also stressed the need to maintain human control over increasingly autonomous weapons.
Thailand’s Defence Minister Adul Boonthumjaroen said the focus should be on building international rules rather than simply competing for technological power. International Committee of the Red Cross Vice President Jurg Lauber also called for human judgment to remain central to decisions on the use of force.
The three day forum brought together about 2,000 military officials, diplomats and academics from 100 countries. The discussions came ahead of planned US China talks, with both countries divided over safeguards for AI used in military systems, including nuclear weapons.
