Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has criticised traders over their recent “Chinese Must Go” protest, which was sparked by concerns about the involvement of Chinese nationals in retail trading in Nigeria.
The traders reportedly expressed frustration over competition from Chinese merchants, alleging that their growing presence in the retail sector is affecting the businesses and livelihoods of local traders.
Reacting to the protest, VeryDarkMan questioned the approach adopted by the protesters and called for greater attention to the underlying challenges facing Nigerian businesses.
He argued that Nigerian entrepreneurs should focus on strengthening local production and reducing dependence on imported goods, while also urging the government to create an environment that supports local businesses.
The development has generated reactions among Nigerians, with discussions centred on foreign participation in Nigeria’s retail sector, local manufacturing and the challenges confronting indigenous businesses.
