Nigerian-American racing sensation Ugo Ugochukwu has expressed pride in his Nigerian heritage after becoming the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Champion, saying he hopes his success will inspire young Africans to pursue their dreams in motorsport.
The 19-year-old sealed the championship in dramatic fashion at the final race of the season at the new Madring circuit in Madrid on Sunday, finishing second to claim the title ahead of Britain’s Freddie Slater.
Ugochukwu ended the campaign with 159 points, 14 clear of Slater, who finished eighth in the decisive race. Finland’s Tuukka Taponen completed the championship podium after winning Feature Race 2.
Speaking to SuperSport after securing the title, the New York-born driver said he was particularly proud to carry his Nigerian heritage onto the global motorsport stage.
“It’s amazing and I’m super proud of my Nigerian roots on my mum’s side. Every time I can get to the podium and get my name out there for anyone watching and supporting in Africa, it means a lot,” Ugochukwu said.
“Hopefully, I can be a role model to all the kids who like to have this dream as well.”
His championship triumph capped a remarkable second season in FIA Formula 3, during which Ugochukwu recorded seven podium finishes, including two victories.
The youngster is a member of the McLaren driver development programme and made his FIA Formula 3 debut with PREMA Racing in 2025.
His maiden campaign ended with a 16th-place championship finish, although he managed two podium appearances and gained valuable experience that laid the foundation for his title-winning season.
Ugochukwu’s rise has been built on years of success in junior motorsport.
Before moving into single-seater racing, he enjoyed a strong karting career and won the CIK-FIA European Championship in the OKJ category.
He made his British F4 debut in 2022, finishing third overall before moving to Italian F4 the following year, where he finished runner-up.
In 2023, he also won the Euro 4 Championship and finished third in the UAE F4 Championship.
The following season saw him compete in both the Formula Regional Middle East and European championships before ending the year on a high by winning the prestigious Macau Grand Prix.
Now a Formula 3 champion, Ugochukwu’s career is continuing to attract attention as he works towards the ultimate goal of reaching Formula 1.
Beyond his achievements on the track, the teenager has also embraced the opportunity to represent his Nigerian heritage.
Ugochukwu is the son of former Nigerian fashion model Oluchi Onweagba and her Italian husband, Luca Orlandi. Onweagba rose to prominence after winning the M-Net Face of Africa modelling competition in 1998.
With his latest achievement, Ugochukwu has added another major milestone to his rapidly developing career and hopes his journey can open the eyes of young Africans to the possibilities available in motorsport.
His message is clear: success on the international racing stage can have a wider impact than trophies alone, particularly when it gives aspiring young drivers a role model to believe in.
