Nigeria Davis Cup Team Arrives Morocco for Crucial World Group II Clash

Nigeria’s Davis Cup team has arrived in Morocco ahead of a crucial World Group II tie against the North Africans on September 19 and 20 in Rabat, following more than a week of intensive preparations in Lagos.

The two-day encounter will take place at the Union Sportive des Cheminots de Tennis du Maroc, where Nigeria will aim to build on its impressive victory over Uzbekistan and continue its progress on the international stage.

The Nigerian contingent includes former national No. 1 Daniel Adeleye, current top-ranked player Canice Abua, Michael Emmanuel and Abubakar Yusuf, with Benson Ishicheli serving as coach.

Four officials of the Nigeria Tennis Federation are also part of the delegation.

The team departed Nigeria in the early hours of Monday and arrived in Morocco at about 11:25 am, with preparations now shifting to the match venue in Rabat.

Ishicheli had spent more than a week working with the players at the Lagos Country Club in Ikeja, focusing on fitness, tactical preparation and match readiness ahead of the important tie.

Nigeria secured its place in World Group II after defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in February.

The victory came after the tie was evenly poised at 1-1 following the opening singles matches.

Nigeria then took control through a crucial doubles victory by Abua and Emmanuel before Adeleye completed the triumph with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ilya Ignatov, who was making his Davis Cup debut for Uzbekistan.

The result provided a major boost to Nigeria’s confidence and strengthened the country’s position in the Davis Cup rankings.

Morocco, meanwhile, will enter the contest after dropping into World Group II following a defeat to Colombia in their World Group I play-off at the USM Tennis Club Stadium in Casablanca.

With both teams eager to make progress in the competition, Nigeria will be hoping its preparations in Lagos can translate into another strong performance on Moroccan soil.

The experienced Adeleye will bring valuable Davis Cup experience to the squad, while Abua, Emmanuel and Yusuf will be expected to play important roles as Nigeria seeks a positive result in Rabat.

The tie represents another opportunity for Nigerian tennis to make progress in the Davis Cup, the premier international men’s team competition organised by the International Tennis Federation.

After overcoming Uzbekistan on home soil earlier this year, Nigeria will now face a tougher challenge away from home, with victory in Morocco potentially providing another significant step forward for the country’s tennis ambitions.
