Italy will extend its suspension of the European Union’s border free Schengen arrangement with Spain by another 15 days, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.
The ministry said the extension was necessary because significant risks to internal security remained, including a possible threat of terrorist infiltration.
Italy initially suspended the Schengen agreement with Spain on July 31 after a large number of migrants crossed from neighbouring Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
The suspension allows Italy to maintain checks on travellers arriving from Spain despite the usual rules permitting passport free movement across participating European countries.
