A section of the Sokoto Central Market was engulfed by fire on Sunday night, destroying several shops, goods and other valuables belonging to traders.
The fire reportedly started at about 8:30 p.m., sending traders, residents and other people in the area into a frantic effort to contain the blaze and rescue whatever could be salvaged from the affected shops.
Firefighters were deployed to the scene and worked to prevent the flames from spreading to other sections of the market, while residents also joined efforts to put out the fire and assist traders in removing goods from nearby shops.
Several businesses were affected by the incident, although the full extent of the damage was yet to be established at the time of the report.
The cause of the fire had not been determined, and there was no immediate official statement from the relevant authorities explaining what may have triggered the outbreak.
The incident occurred at a time when many traders had already closed for the day, but the fire quickly attracted residents and business owners who rushed to the market after noticing the flames.
Some traders were seen attempting to move merchandise and valuables away from the affected area as firefighters battled the blaze.
The extent of the financial losses is expected to become clearer after authorities and market officials assess the affected shops and goods.
Market fires remain a major concern for traders across Nigeria, where large concentrations of businesses and merchandise can result in significant economic losses whenever outbreaks occur.
The Sokoto incident is also expected to renew calls for stronger fire-prevention measures, improved emergency access and adequate firefighting facilities around major markets.
Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and determine the cause of the fire, while affected traders may require assistance to recover from the losses suffered in the blaze.
