Amazon has temporarily suspended its operations with Miami-based cargo carrier 21 Air following the fatal crash of an Amazon Air flight at Miami International Airport.
The decision comes after a 21 Air-operated Boeing 767-300 freighter, flying for Amazon Air, overran a runway while landing last weekend and struck several vehicles on the ground. Five people were killed in the accident.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company had been supporting the investigation and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident before deciding to pause operations with 21 Air, the operator of Flight 7598. Amazon said it would continue cooperating with investigators and supporting those affected by the crash.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the accident. Investigators said flight recorder data showed the pilots considered aborting the landing after the aircraft touched down. One pilot had also warned that the aircraft was flying too fast more than a minute before landing.
The aircraft was a 32-year-old Boeing 767-300 freighter that had previously operated as a passenger aircraft for several airlines before being converted for cargo use. It was on its third flight of the day after earlier trips between Cincinnati, Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
21 Air said it remains committed to supporting the families affected by the accident and is cooperating with the NTSB, Amazon and other partners. The company also said it remains confident in its safety policies, procedures and training as the investigation continues.
