China’s state-backed Global Times has criticized Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call to slow the development of advanced artificial intelligence, describing the proposal as a “Cold War playbook” aimed at limiting China’s technological progress.
Amodei recently argued that AI development should be paced to give governments and companies more time to address growing safety risks. He also urged the United States to maintain restrictions on advanced AI chips and semiconductor equipment exports to China, citing concerns over strategic competition.
The Global Times accused Washington of using technology restrictions to preserve its advantage in cutting-edge AI and exclude China from global AI governance. China’s Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, called for international cooperation, warning that confrontation and excessive competition could undermine efforts to establish responsible AI governance.
The dispute highlights growing tensions between the United States and China over AI leadership, regulation and access to advanced computing technology. Both countries are expected to discuss AI safety and governance as part of broader diplomatic engagements later this month.
