Education stakeholders have called for a major transformation of Nigeria’s education system, urging schools to move away from excessive reliance on memorisation and recall.
The stakeholders said the focus of teaching and learning should increasingly be placed on practical application, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving to better prepare students for the demands of the modern world.
They argued that simply testing students on their ability to remember information does not adequately measure their capacity to apply knowledge or develop solutions to real life challenges.
The stakeholders therefore advocated reforms that would encourage learners to think independently, develop practical skills and apply classroom knowledge to everyday situations.
They also called for teaching methods and assessment systems that promote innovation and deeper understanding rather than rewarding memorisation alone.
