The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected the proposed introduction of the National Learner Identification Number (LIN), describing the initiative as unnecessary and urging the Federal Government to suspend its implementation.

NANS President, Babatunde Afeez Akinteye, said the proposed system would create another identification framework despite the existence of the National Identification Number (NIN), which is already recognised as Nigeria’s national identification system.

According to a report by The Guardian, the students’ body acknowledged the need for an accurate and reliable database in the education sector but argued that the objective could be achieved by strengthening the existing national identification system rather than introducing a separate number for learners.

NANS maintained that students are important stakeholders in the education sector and should be consulted before policies affecting their identity, academic records, welfare and future are introduced.

The association also criticised the National Orientation Agency (NOA), accusing it of exceeding its statutory responsibilities by becoming involved in the proposed learner identification initiative.

NANS argued that NOA’s primary responsibilities include promoting communication between government and citizens, obtaining public feedback and encouraging citizens’ participation in government affairs.

The students’ body therefore urged the agency to focus on its core mandate and avoid policies that it said directly affect students without adequate consultation with their representatives.

NANS called on the Federal Government to immediately stop further steps toward implementing the LIN and ensure that students are carried along in future policy decisions concerning the education sector.

The association said it would continue to advocate for the rights, welfare and interests of Nigerian students and resist policies it considers unnecessary or burdensome.
