Angola’s National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG), ExxonMobil and partners have announced a new oil discovery at the Vicango Este 01 exploration well in offshore Block 15.
The well, located about 370 km northwest of Luanda, was drilled to a depth of 940 metres and encountered about 25 metres of high quality sandstone containing hydrocarbons, the companies said.
The discovery is the 20th in Block 15, one of Angola’s major deepwater oil producing areas. The block has produced more than 2.7 billion barrels of oil over the past 30 years.
ExxonMobil Angola CEO Brian Unietis said the discovery could help maximise existing infrastructure and create opportunities for future production.
Angola, Africa’s second largest crude oil producer after Nigeria, has introduced regulatory reforms aimed at attracting more exploration investment and sustaining output from its ageing offshore fields.
