The National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) has identified low investor confidence and weak institutions as major challenges hindering the transformation of Africa’s agricultural sector.
NADF Executive Secretary, Mohammed Ibrahim, stated this at the Africa Food Systems Forum in Rwanda, where he called for stronger leadership, reliable data and predictable markets to attract more investment into agriculture.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ibrahim said Africa has significant resources capable of driving agricultural growth but needs credible institutions to convert available capital into reliable food systems.
He said NADF was promoting blended finance, co financing and partnerships with banks, insurers, processors and development partners to mobilise private investment.
Ibrahim urged governments to measure the success of agricultural interventions not only by the amount of public funds spent but also by the additional investment and results generated.
He stressed that farmers must be treated as economic actors rather than beneficiaries of government programmes, adding that NADF’s goal was to build an agricultural sector capable of attracting sustained investment from financial institutions and development partners.
