Jaguar Land Rover is set to cut thousands of jobs as the British luxury carmaker steps up efforts to reduce costs following a sharp decline in profits and a difficult trading environment.

The company has opened a voluntary redundancy programme for salaried and management employees, with as many as 4,000 positions potentially affected over the next two years.

JLR has not formally confirmed the final number of jobs that will be lost, but the planned reductions form part of a wider strategy to simplify the business, improve efficiency and strengthen its financial position.

The carmaker is seeking to save about £1.7bn over the next two years as it battles weaker vehicle sales, rising costs, international trade pressures and growing competition in key markets.

The company, owned by India’s Tata Motors, employs about 30,000 people in Britain, with a large proportion working across manufacturing and other operations in the West Midlands.

JLR’s financial performance has deteriorated significantly over the past year. Its full year revenue for the financial year ended March 2026 fell to £22.9bn, down 20.9 per cent from the previous year, while profit before tax and exceptional items plunged to just £14m from £2.5bn.

The company has also been dealing with the consequences of a major cyber incident that disrupted production, alongside the impact of United States tariffs and weaker market conditions.

In its latest quarterly results, JLR reported revenue of £6bn for the three months to June 2026, representing a 9.6 per cent decline from a year earlier. Profit before tax and exceptional items fell almost 69 per cent to £109m.

The company said its wholesale volumes also declined by 9.2 per cent during the quarter, reflecting supply constraints and disruption in several markets.

Competition from Chinese vehicle manufacturers has added to the pressure facing the company, particularly as cheaper models gain ground in the British and wider European markets.

JLR is responding by attempting to lower its break even point and focus more heavily on its luxury brands, including Range Rover and Defender.

The company is also investing heavily in electric vehicles, with the recently launched electric Range Rover forming part of its strategy to strengthen its product line-up as the global automotive industry shifts towards cleaner technologies.

However, the restructuring is likely to put further pressure on workers and communities that depend heavily on the automotive industry.

Britain’s Business Secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, is expected to meet JLR’s chief executive, PB Balaji, to discuss the planned redundancies and explore ways of limiting the impact on workers.

Trade union leaders have also raised concerns about the scale of the proposed job losses and are expected to push for measures that could protect employment.

The planned cuts come at a difficult time for Britain’s manufacturing sector, which is facing pressure from weak demand, high operating costs, trade barriers and intense competition from overseas manufacturers.

For JLR, management says reducing costs and simplifying its operations will be necessary to make the company more resilient and better positioned for future growth.

The company has said it remains committed to its long term product investment programme despite the restructuring, as it prepares to introduce new electric and luxury models into the global market.

The job cuts, however, underline the scale of the financial challenges confronting one of Britain’s best known automotive manufacturers.
