Formula One’s governing body has reinstated Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar to third place at the Monaco Grand Prix and demoted Alpine’s Pierre Gasly after an appeal overturned an earlier decision that had restored Gasly to the podium.
Gasly originally finished third on the track on June 7, but was dropped to seventh after two five second penalties for pit lane speeding were added to his race time. Hadjar was subsequently promoted to third.
Alpine later successfully exercised its right to review, presenting evidence that a timing error had caused Gasly’s speed to be incorrectly recorded. The penalties were withdrawn on June 12, restoring Gasly to third and moving Hadjar back to fourth.
Red Bull and McLaren challenged that decision before the FIA International Court of Appeal, arguing that the removal of Gasly’s penalties had created an unfair outcome for other drivers who had served similar penalties during the race. The appeal court heard the case in Paris last month.
The latest ruling reverses the June decision, meaning Hadjar regains the Monaco podium while Gasly returns to seventh in the final classification. The result also reshuffles the positions of several drivers behind them.
The decision comes ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, with the long running dispute over the Monaco result finally settled nearly three months after the race.
