China on Friday removed senior military officers Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli from their positions on the state Central Military Commission, state run Xinhua news agency reported.

The two generals were placed under investigation in January for suspected serious violations of discipline and law.

Zhang, a vice chairman of the commission and a senior figure under President Xi Jinping, was also a member of the ruling Communist Party’s Politburo. Liu served as a commission member and chief of its Joint Staff Department.

The announcement concerns their positions in the state Central Military Commission. They have not been publicly removed from the parallel Central Military Commission of the Communist Party.

The move adds to uncertainty over China’s military leadership as authorities continue investigations into senior officers.
