Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s government has proposed new rules requiring major social media platforms to prevent under-16s from accessing their services.
The plan aims to protect children from harmful content, cyberbullying and excessive social media use. Platforms that fail to follow the rules could face heavy fines.
The proposal still faces political opposition and must pass through Parliament before becoming law.
New Zealand’s move follows similar action in Australia and growing global efforts to strengthen child safety online.
