An oncologist, Dr Temitope Olatunji, has urged Nigerians to promptly seek medical attention whenever they notice unusual symptoms in their bodies, warning that delayed action could increase the risk of cancer related deaths.
Olatunji, a Radiation and Clinical Consultant at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota, Ogun State, on Monday.
According to NAN, the oncologist also encouraged Nigerians to make annual health screening and medical checkups a routine, saying early detection gives doctors a better chance of treating illnesses before they become life threatening.
She identified poverty as one of the major barriers preventing many Nigerians from accessing regular health checks and treatment.
Olatunji called on governments to strengthen public education and awareness campaigns on cancer, stressing that Nigerians should understand the importance of early detection and treatment.
She also commended the Federal Government’s health insurance initiative, saying greater public awareness would help reduce out of pocket healthcare expenses.
Her warning comes shortly after the death of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who reportedly battled stage four cancer before his death on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the age of 66.
The actor was buried in his hometown, Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday, after his family reportedly appealed for medical assistance shortly before his death.
