President Bola Tinubu has urged political parties and candidates participating in the 2027 general elections to avoid treating the contest as a do-or-die affair, warning against the use of ethnic and religious sentiments to gain political advantage.
Tinubu gave the warning during the signing of the National Peace Accord ahead of the commencement of campaigns for the 2027 elections. He urged politicians to focus on ideas, policies and programmes that can improve the lives of Nigerians rather than exploiting divisions.
The President also called on political actors to reject violence, hate speech, misinformation and incitement, including the spread of false information through social media and artificial intelligence.
He stressed that all political stakeholders are partners in nation-building and that Nigeria should remain the ultimate winner regardless of who emerges victorious at the polls.
The National Peace Accord was signed by presidential candidates and representatives of political parties as part of efforts to promote peaceful, credible and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
