Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has threatened legal action over the alleged substitution of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Adamawa State ahead of the 2027 election.
Lawal alleged that the ADC replaced Engr. Umar Suleiman, who he said won the party’s governorship primary, with Tukur Moddibo.
According to Lawal, the alleged substitution violated the Electoral Act 2026, the ADC Constitution and the party’s primary election guidelines. He said the matter would be challenged in court.
The former SGF also criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the ADC leadership over the development, alleging that political considerations influenced the decision to replace Suleiman.
Lawal maintained that Suleiman won the party’s primary convincingly and argued that his removal could negatively affect the ADC’s chances in the 2027 Adamawa governorship election.
He further warned that the controversy could deepen divisions within the party and urged stakeholders to respect due process in selecting candidates for the forthcoming election.
The dispute is now threatening to move into the courts, with Lawal insisting that the alleged substitution must be tested against the relevant electoral laws and the ADC’s internal rules.
