A man has reportedly been beaten to death by members of a local security group after he was accused of stealing a mobile phone in Delta State.

The incident was disclosed by the Delta State Police Command spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, who said the victim was allegedly attacked by members of the Anioma Security Watch after being accused of stealing the phone.

According to the police spokesperson, the security group mobilised and beat the man severely, leading to his death. The suspects reportedly fled the scene after the killing.

In a disturbing twist, the missing phone was later found in the possession of the daughter of the woman who had raised the alarm over its disappearance.

Edafe condemned the incident and used the case to warn against jungle justice, stressing the need for suspected criminals to be handed over to the appropriate authorities rather than being subjected to mob action.

The police spokesperson did not disclose the identity of the deceased or confirm whether arrests had been made in connection with the incident.

The case has renewed concerns over the dangers of jungle justice and the need for members of the public to allow law enforcement agencies to investigate allegations of theft and other crimes.
