Nigeria’s Flamingos revived their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over tournament debutants Puerto Rico in their second Group B fixture on Tuesday.
The Nigerian youngsters responded impressively to their opening 2-1 defeat against Poland, securing three valuable points at the Mohammed VI Football Complex.
Head coach Akeem Busari made key adjustments to strengthen the midfield and improve defensive stability, with the changes helping Nigeria take control from the opening whistle.
Forward Oluwakemi Adegbuyi broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, capping Nigeria’s early pressure with a well-taken finish to give the Flamingos a deserved lead.
Nigeria maintained their intensity after the breakthrough, pressing high and restricting Puerto Rico’s opportunities to build attacks from the back.
The Flamingos’ defence also delivered a disciplined performance, keeping their opponents at bay to preserve a clean sheet and protect their advantage.
Substitute Precious Oscar then sealed the victory in the 93rd minute, doubling Nigeria’s lead late in the contest and confirming their first win of the tournament.
The result restores confidence in the Nigerian camp and strengthens the team’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stage after their disappointing opening defeat.
Attention will now turn to Friday’s final Group B fixture against Asian powerhouse DPR Korea, where the Flamingos will seek another positive result to boost their chances of reaching the Round of 16.
