The Federal Government has commenced the implementation of a 13.92 megawatt solar powered mini grid project in Yobe State as part of ongoing efforts to improve electricity access, accelerate rural electrification and promote the use of renewable energy across the country.

The project is expected to provide reliable and affordable electricity to thousands of households, businesses, schools, healthcare facilities and public institutions in underserved communities, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and expensive power alternatives. It also aligns with the government’s broader commitment to expanding energy access while supporting sustainable economic development.

Speaking during the flag off ceremony, government officials described the initiative as a major milestone in Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy and a demonstration of the administration’s resolve to close the electricity access gap in rural and semi urban communities. They noted that improved access to electricity remains critical to stimulating economic activities, enhancing productivity and improving the quality of life for citizens.

The 13.92MW solar mini grid project forms part of ongoing investments aimed at diversifying Nigeria’s energy mix and strengthening power infrastructure through renewable energy solutions. Officials explained that solar mini grids offer an effective alternative for communities that are either not connected to the national grid or suffer from inadequate electricity supply.

According to the government, the project will support small and medium sized enterprises by providing stable electricity needed to operate equipment, preserve agricultural produce and reduce production costs. Reliable power is also expected to boost commercial activities, attract new investments and create employment opportunities within host communities.

Healthcare facilities and educational institutions are among the key beneficiaries of the project. With improved electricity supply, hospitals and primary healthcare centres will be able to provide better medical services, preserve vaccines and operate essential equipment without frequent power interruptions. Schools will also benefit from enhanced learning environments through improved lighting and access to digital educational resources.

The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions associated with diesel and petrol generators, which remain the primary source of electricity for many rural communities. Government officials stressed that expanding renewable energy infrastructure is essential to achieving Nigeria’s climate commitments while improving energy security.

The project is also expected to stimulate local economic development through job creation during both the construction and operational phases. Skilled and unskilled workers from host communities are expected to benefit from employment opportunities, while local businesses are likely to experience increased demand for goods and services as economic activities expand.

Officials reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to working with development partners, the private sector and state governments to scale up renewable energy projects across the country. They emphasized that investments in clean energy infrastructure remain vital to achieving universal electricity access and supporting Nigeria’s long term economic growth objectives.

As work begins on the Yobe solar mini grid project, stakeholders expressed optimism that the initiative will serve as a model for similar renewable energy investments nationwide, helping bridge the electricity gap, improve livelihoods and promote inclusive development in communities that have long faced inadequate power supply.
